While McMahon supports downsizing and ending federal overreach in education, she has acknowledged that the department cannot be completely eliminated without congressional approval. The proposed changes are expected to impact staff, budgets, and educational programs, though key funding like Pell Grants and student loans should remain unaffected. The department is already facing staff reductions and administrative turnover, creating challenges in its operations.
